Program Updates | FAQs | Discussion Forum Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) ************************************************ Most applications dealing with ATCsimulator® require the Visual Basic (VB) 6.0 runtime files at a minimum. If these files are missing, you could encounter "error 5". You can download the runtime files by clicking (or right-clcking) on the following link: http://www.atcsimulator.com/support/vbrun60sp5.exe and selecting, "Save Target As" to download the file to a folder of your choice on your computer. I have recently discovered that error 5 can also occur if the Lernout & Hauspie TruVoice American English TTS Engine is not installed. Please run "TV_ENUA.EXE" from the ATC Simulator folder or CD. ************************************* Although the SDK is recommended for improving SR with ATCsimulator®, the SDK should not be installed until AFTER 1.5 has been installed and is running. If the SDK is already installed on your system, you will need to remove it before installing ATCsimulator® 1.5 using Control Panel Add/Remove programs. Other components will need to be removed as well. Here is a list of items that should NOT exist on your system before installing the 1.5 version of ATCsimulator®. Lernout & Hauspie TruVoice American English TTS Engine If you have any or all of these components listed above, please remove them before installing ATCsimulator® version 1.5. Once you have successfully installed version 1.5 and it is running, you can then re-install the Microsoft Speech SDK Suite 4.0a. ****************************** The new retail package of version 1.5 requires that NO copy of ATCsimulator® exist on your computer before attempting an installation. If it does, it will confuse the installation and will not install properly. If you have a previous version, you must remove it, and it's folder, and it's registry information. Here is how to do that: Step 1: Use START > SETTINGS > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs "ATC Simulator" (or any variation of that listed) Step 2: Use Windows Explorer and delete the folder left behind after program removal which is typically, "C:\Program Files\ATC Simulator" or "C:\Program Files\ATC Simulator(tm) by AEROSOFT(USA)" Step 3: START > RUN > "Regedit" > [Enter] Expand and locate this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\ATCSimulator Click on the word "ATCSimulator" and delete it. Exit REGEDIT. You can now install the new retail version of 1.5 *Note: Also be sure and check that you have DirectX 8.1 installed on your computer by running "DXSETUP.EXE" in the "DirectX" folder of the ATCsimulator® 1.5 CD. ******************************************************** This error is an identified bug which can be read about in the Microsoft Article listed below: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q189400& We do not yet know of a resolution, but we would suggest installing the game in Safe Mode (pressing F8 during bootup). ******************************************************** If you receive a message telling you "system files are out of date..." Microsoft has identified this problem and has offered a variety of solutions, but in assisting a customer (Windows XP Home Edition) we discovered the easiest way to get around this problem is to: 1. If you have the hard drive space, copy the entire CD contents to a temporary folder on the hard drive, call it something like "ATCsimulator Setup Folder", creating all of the folders and files from the CD. For more information about this problem, here is a link to a Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q191096& ***************** If you are simply downloading the 1.5 patch (that is the key phrase ---it is a PATCH), you are REQUIRED to have version 1.1 installed AND running on your computer BEFORE you attempt to apply the patch. This is repeated again later in this listing and is very important. It will save you a lot of heartache. If you purchased the 1.5 version on or after July 4, 2002, there are NO updates currently needed. If you experience a problem, I suggest you first read the manual, paying close attention to the section about DirectX 8.1. Also, refer to the troubleshooting section at the back of the manual. If you cannot resolve the problem, then send an email to atcsimulator@cox.net. We will respond as quickly as possible to ascertain the problem and find a solution. DO NOT CONTACT PC AVIATOR. PC Aviator is no longer the publisher of the product, although they are listed in the manual. ******************************************************* There is a situation with Windows 2000/Pro and possibly other Windows versions (Windows/ME) that do not install the 1.5 correctly if the Lernout & Hauspie TruVoice TTS Engine already exists the first time you run the new version. If you run the new version and you are told you need to reboot your computer for the new settings to take effect BEFORE you reach the Sector Installer as explained in the manual, you will need to answer "NO" to the reboot prompt. You can then continue with the installation. If you answer "Yes" and reboot your computer, the sector data will have NOT been installed and will generate the error 76 the next time you run the game. There are two things that you must do: First, check the registry for proper paths to ATC Simulator by doing the following: START > RUN > "Regedit" > [Enter] Expand and locate the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\ATCSimulator\Install Click on the word 'Install' and look at the values for "ATCPath" and "SectorPath". If you had used the default installation paths for the game, they should both read; "C:\Program Files\ATC Simulator" If they do not, double-click over each item and manually change the entry. Then, exit REGEDIT and run the sim again. You must then, run the sector installer by; 1. Insert the ATC 1.5 CD. 2. Exit the SETUP program if it runs automatically. 3. Then, select START > PROGRAMS > AEROSOFT > SECTOR INSTALLER. 4. Click on [Begin] to install the Sector data. 5. Exit the installer. Now, run ATC Simulator. * IMPORTANT NOTE CONCERNING SPEECH RECOGNITION * ATCsimulator® IS NOT COMPATIBLE with version 5.0 or 5.1 of Microsoft's Speech SDK. ONLY 4.0a. http://download.microsoft.com/download/speechSDK/Install/4.0a/WIN98/EN-US/SAPI4SDKSUITE.exe ******************* At this time, the speech recognition engine (by Microsoft) only utilizes analog microphones (plugged into the sound card). USB is not supported. **********************DISCLAIMER************************* * 1.5 Patch Notes * THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT REGARDING 1.1 and 1.5 * BEFORE applying the 1.5 patch, 1.1 MUST be installed AND running correctly. DO NOT INSTALL 1.1 and then immediately apply the 1.5 patch without running 1.1 AT LEAST ONE TIME to complete the installation. Failing to do so will result in a variety of errors. Also, do NOT unzip the 1.5 patch into the ATCsimulator® folder. Use something like C:\TEMP or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP to unzip the patch. If you unzip the patch into the "ATC Simulator" folder, you will probably encounter "error 53 - file not found". You will then need to follow the instructions of restoring 1.1 before trying to apply the patch again. We failed to mention in our initial mailout to customers that the 1.5 version of ATCsimulator® does require Microsoft DirectX 8.1. If you have Windows 98/98SE or ME, you can visit
and download the retail version of DirectX 8.1. This must be installed prior to running the installation of the 1.5 update. ****************************************************************** This error will occur if you unzip the 1.5 update into the "ATC Simulator" folder. ******************************* Do this very carefully. START > RUN > "Regedit" > [Enter] Expand and locate the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\ATCSimulator\Install Click on the word 'Install' and look at the values for "ATCPath" and "SectorPath". If you had used the default installation paths for the game, they should both read; "C:\Program Files\ATC Simulator" If they do not, double-click over each item and manually change the entry. Then, exit REGEDIT and run the sim again. ****************************** As with any version of Windows, you should periodically check that you have the latest Service Packs installed on your system (http://www.microsoft.com). Automation errors are usually related to missing Windows components, some of which will not be provided by ATCsimulator®, and are assumed to be installed on your system. If you encounter this error, you should update your version of DirectX. With version 1.5 of ATCsimulator®, DirectX 8.1 is required. It is provided on the 1.5 CD under the "DIRECTX" folder, or can be downloaded from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/directx *********************************************** This is an indication that you did not have DirectX 8.1 installed when you updated to 1.5. See the note above concerning DirectX 8.1. But, you can do the following to restore your copy of 1.1. 1. Locate the file, "ATCSIMULATOR.BAK" and "ATCSIMULATOR.EXE" in the ATCsimulator® Folder. 2. If the .BAK file was found, delete "ATCSIMULATOR.EXE" from that folder. 3. Rename "ATCSIMULATOR.BAK" to "ATCSIMULATOR.EXE" Then, run the simulator once to restore the version #. You can then correct the problem before attempting the update again. ********************************************************** If you encounter this error, it is easily corrected by replacing the file "SCRRUN.DLL" in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. http://www.atcsimulator.com/support/scrrun.dll Right click and select "Save Target As" and save it into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder on your computer, replacing the older file. ********************************* The new 1.5 contains a corrected installer for the add-ons. After 1.5 installation, it will be found as normal under START > Programs > Aerosoft > Sector Installer. But, you need to do one of two things, either disable autorun for your cd-rom, or insert one of the expansion CDs, and when the old installer runs (which is on the CD), immediately exit it to avoid having the sim overwritten with the older version on that CD. But, leave the CD in the drive. Then, choose the installer from the menus as I explained above. When it begins, it will show the source path, and the destination. If the source is not your CD-ROM, select it using the [BROWSE] button. It will identify which CD is in the drive by region and it will be noted across the top of the form. You can then select all of the sectors using the [ ADD ALL ] button. Then press [ BEGIN ]. It will copy all of the sector information to your system. To add one of the other CDs, simply replace the one in the drive with another. But, if autorun is still enabled, it will once again execute the old installer, so you will need to pay attention and simply exit the old version once again, leaving the CD in the drive. The new installer will still be running. Now, back to the new installer, reselect the source drive with the [ BROWSE ] button once again so it will re-read the identity of the CD contents. Then repeat [ ADD ALL ], and [ BEGIN ] once more. The same applies with a 3rd CD. When done you should have 120 sectors now available for the sim.
